Unit 2 Evaluation

As I had mentioned in previous evaluations I found this unit to be a very up and down process. I felt I didn’t really connect with any of the projects until I got to the book project, which meant eventually I had to go back and further develop each section until I finally had a result I felt proud of. I do believe I have eventually achieved this, and for the future I have learnt the importance of working on everything at the time given rather than waiting until the end. For the next project I will try to work on an idea I can fully get behind so that I am able to achieve work quicker and more effectively so that I can spend less time fixing my work, and instead more time further developing my ideas.

The beginning part of this project, we spent a lot of time developing our individual drawing skills, through drawing on location, this influenced me to start going to Life drawing classes as I felt my people drawing ability was lacking and I didn’t want this to affect my location drawings. I do think I made great progress with these drawings and I think you ca clearly see the improvements i made throughout the project.

This is especially made clear through the Parade Project, where I drew one human character again and again for a stop motion. Before this project, I hadn’t ever designed a character before, and by looking at other character artists works, I do believe I was able to design some effective characters. For this project I also had the opportunity to explore some colour work as its something I usually shy away from. It was definitely a challenging project, and I felt my progression was moving very slowly, I do think this is down to the fact the entire thing was massively out of my comfort zone but despite this, I am quite proud of what I was able to achieve. I think for my first attempt at making coloured character designs they are better than I thought I was capable of! I think for the future I want to explore using colour further, however I don’t think it really fits for my next project.

I really enjoyed The book project, and I felt it was a really good opportunity to explore techniques I haven’t explored in a while, for example Etching! I think the book cover I was able to generate using this method is really effective, and definitely matches the feeling that Edgar Allan Poe generates within his narrative. I think I would have liked to further develop the back cover but given the time constraints I am still pleased with what I have been able to achieve.

Unit 2 has show me how I best work, highlighting that I need to have full confidence in a project in order to fully enjoy the process of creating. I need to explore techniques that I perhaps feel less confident in, for example colour work, since from that experience I am able to create something I am quite proud of. For the FMP I want to really broaden my creative practice, perhaps straying away from the monotone colour and detail I usually work with.
