Induction Projects

Personal Hat

For the Foundation Induction we where tasked to create different hats: one as a group and one as a personal project.

Evaluation

For the personal hat I decided to represent my favourite animal and try to create a bear hat. I used the same method I used to create the fruit bowl as I did to create the base of the hat: By wrapping wire in a circle to create a base and then adding to that with layers of masking tape. After creating the base with the tape I added the eyes and nose with marker, however I felt as though the bear was missing some detail, so I went back and added tufts of fur using cut up strips of paper.

Overall, I am proud of what I was able to achieve, I haven’t ever made something like this so it definitely tested my skills and allowed me to create something I didn’t know I could craft, I think if I had the opportunity to create something like this again i would strive to create a bigger structure so that the details of the bear would shine through, and that the hat would sit larger on my head. I also thought it would be interesting to try to add colour to the bear in order for it to look less like a polar bear and more like a brown bear. I think by slightly staining the masking tape with coffee or tea, would give a subtle brown hue that works to make the bear appear more brown but not be too overwhelming.

Group Hat

As a group we quickly sketched out different ideas, however landed on the fruit bowl for the idea that each person in the group could be represented by a different aspect of the bowl. We needed an idea that would allow each of us in the group something to do without anyone being left out. My role in the group was to create the structure of the bowl as well as the vines that we used to decorate it. To create the bowl we first make a shape from wire, which we reinforced with strips of cardboard which were then further reinforced with layers of masking tape to fill in the gaps.

Richard Serra Verb List Project

Initial Ideas:

  • Spill/Splash – Spilt liquid + added ink linework
  • Wrap – Cling film + paint
  • Mapping – Wire maps/ Structure
  • To Spill/ To Hole/ Of Nature/ To Twist

To Spill

“Giuliano Martinuzzo is an artist who uses interlocking lines repeatedly layered on top of each other in order to create a unique and interesting affect. I wanted to explore his technique relating to the verb “to spill”. I wanted to practice Martinuzzo’s method by creating pieces using black acrylic paint mixed with water and poured over paper in order to create a unique shape that I then followed with the black line-work. I think for my next attempt it would be better to have a darker paint mix as it would add more depth to the overall piece, as well as planning my lines beforehand so that they flow as easily as possible.”

My Response

To Twist

David Olivera – I used David Olivera’s wire creations as inspiration of what to create relating to the word to twist.

My response

“Using wire to create animals- Inspired by David Olvera. Taking what I learnt from creating the wire frames for my bear hat, I thought I would take what I learnt and explore the work of David Olvera. I wanted to create a wire animal head, using the same bending technique I used for my mask.”
